In today's society a lot of black women have found that brands do not support them, or the needs of their community. Black women have found that the best way to fulfill their own needs is to create the products and companies themselves. In this section we show brands created by underrepresented groups for underrepresented groups.

Shea Moisture

Shea Moisture is a hair-care product that was founded in 1912 by Sofi Tucker. Shea Moisture is a product that is used for textured hair types and provides moisture that other products don't. 

Chocolate Kinks and Kurls

Chocolate Kinks and Kurls is a black-owned hair-care product. The owner, Juanita Henderson, created the product is hopes to help women of color feel comfortable with their natural hair.

Murray's Hair Superior Products

Founded in 1925 by Mr. C.D. Murray, Murray's hair products were made to provide men of color products for cheap.

tgin- Thank God It's Natural

Chris-Tia Donaldson is the owner of tgin and created it to provide hair-cair for African American groups that struggled finding hair products that worked for them due to lack of diversity between commonly known products at stores like Target, Sally's beauty, and Walmart.

Kerry Gold Irish Butter

Kerry Gold Irish Butter was created in 1962. The brand is Irish owned, and the butter was created to showcase the amazing qualities of Irish Dairy. This brand celebrates the history and culture of  Ireland and benefits the people from that community.

Fenty Beauty Products

Ways to avoid appropriation

Resist the sacred

Costumes are poor  ways to represent a culture.

Society today likes to copy sacred practices, and in addition to not giving credit, we also mock the culture we are intending to duplicate. A good example of this is when people dress up as a Native American on Halloween.
